We fabricate quantum materials by stacking atomically thin crystals. By carefully choosing the configuration of the various layers (chemical composition, alignment…), we engineer the geometry and topology of electronic energy bands. Our aim is to promote electronic correlations and the onset of new phases, such as superconductivity.
We work in particular with semiconducting layers (transition metal dichalcogenides), which hosts excitons, ie bound particle-hole pairs, strongly coupled to light. The later can be used both as a probe and a constituent of quantum materials.
The stacking of atomically thin materials is the first steps in all our research projects, and represents a major technical challenge. We are thus developing innovative fabrication strategies that enable scalable and reproducible assembly of complex heterostructures.
