The integration of oxides into spintronics devices dates to the end of the 90’s. The wide variety of physical properties found in these materials has allowed the fabrication of hybrid materials, the observation of unexpected phenomena and the possibility of testing different concepts. Thin oxide layers were shown to be extremely sensitive to strains and their properties notably affected by surfaces and interfaces. In recent articles we reported the effects of strains on the magnetism of ultrathin CaMnO3 films and other magnetic materials.   We were drawn to the idea of manipulating the magnetism of the material with electric fields and strains and we designed and investigated artificial multiferroics based on perovskites. Again, interfaces played a critical role in defining the physical properties of multiferroics, i.e. through different couplings and effects arisen from symmetry breaking and charge/spin and orbital reconstruction. In my talk I will present an introduction of the state of the art in the subject and discuss our most recent results obtained in the field.
