SUMMARY:Soutenance de thèse - PhD Defense - Pascale Nasr - 14/10/26
que quantique.\nHarvesting the Magnetic Field of Light at the Nanoscale\nR
étrique.\nAbstract\nLight-matter interactions at optical frequencies are
almost universally described\, and exploited\, through the electric compon
ent of the electromagnetic field. Yet light also carries a magnetic field
which\, although its coupling to matter is typically four to five orders o
f magnitude weaker\, drives specific transitions in certain quantum emitte
rs. Trivalent lanthanide ions\, and europium (Eu³⁺) in particular\, exh
ibit both electric dipole (ED) and magnetic dipole (MD) transitions of com
parable strength in the visible range\, making them unique probes and sour
ces of magnetic\nlight.\nThis Thesis investigates how engineered photonic
nanostructures can harvest\, enhance\, and control the magnetic field of l
ight at the nanoscale\, and how this control translates into the manipulat
ion of the spontaneous emission of Eu³⁺ ions. After establishing the th
eoretical framework of magnetic light-matter interactions and the numerica
l methods (finite difference time-domain simulations\, radiative local den
sity of states calculations) used throughout this work\, and after reviewi
ng the state of the art in magnetic nanophotonics\, two complementary ante
nna platforms are studied. First\, silicon nanocylinders supporting low-lo
ss magnetic Mie resonances are designed and optimized to enhance the magne
tic radiative local density of states at the position of Eu³⁺-doped ZrO
 ₂ supra-particles\, whose synthesis\, silica encapsulation\, and optical
characterization are presented. Second\, rectangular nanoslits in an alum
inum film\, which behave as magnetic dipolar antennas by virtue of Babinet
 's principle\, are fabricated and coupled to europium-doped thin films\, t
heir geometry and polarization dependent response is characterized by nano
-spectroscopy and compared quantitatively to simulations.\nThe results dem
onstrate that both dielectric and plasmonic (Babinet-inverted) nanoantenna
s can selectively enhance the magnetic emission channels of Eu³⁺\, and
establish design rules\, related to spectral matching\, emitter positionin
g\, and the choice of excitation polarization\, in order to engineer magne
tic spontaneous emission. These findings open exciting perspectives in nan
ophotonics by establishing the magnetic field of light as a fully exploita
ble degree of freedom\, with potential applications in spectroscopy\, sens
ing\, chiral light-matter interaction\, and the development of novel nanos
 cale light sources.\nJury\n\n Anne-Laure Baudrion-Beal - Maîtresse de co
