SUMMARY:Soutenance de thèse - PhD Defense - Guillaume Benas - 25/09/26
DESCRIPTION:[wp-svg-icons icon="location" wrap="I"] Amphithéâtre Herpin\,
contribuer au transport protonique.\n\nAbstract\nIn the pursuit of more ef
ficient\, safer\, and more sustainable energy storage technologies\, resea
rch into materials for the development of all-solid-state systems has inte
nsified in recent years. Andersson Wadsley-type titanium oxides M2Ti2O5 (M
= Rb or K) exhibit high ionic/protonic conductivity at room temperature\,
as well as a high dielectric permittivity\, making them promising candida
tes for applications as solid electrolytes. These materials have been the
subject of numerous experimental studies\, which relate their properties t
o their strongly hygroscopic nature\, but do not provide insight into the
atomic-scale mechanisms responsible for their macroscopic properties. In t
his context\, this thesis uses ab\ninitio calculations based on density fu
nctional theory to investigate several aspects of Rb2Ti2O5 at the atomic s
cale\, with a particular focus on its hydration.\nFirst\, the bulk crystal
structure is described\, highlighting its layered nature. The unusual coo
rdination of titanium atoms\, surrounded by oxygen atoms in a pentagonal-p
yramidal geometry\, gives the apical oxygen atoms enhanced mobility and re
activity\, as well as allowing Rb⁺ ions to move within the (001) plane.
These characteristics facilitate the incorporation of water molecules into
the interlayer space\, where they organize into chains oriented along the
b direction. The resulting hydrogen-bond network exhibits vibrational sig
natures in good agreement with experimental observations and may promote c
ollective proton-transfer mechanisms. However\, bulk hydration remains lim
ited to low water contents\, and therefore cannot account for the large am
ounts of water measured experimentally.\nThe study then focuses on low-ind
ex surfaces. For each surface\, the relaxation of the stoichiometric\, unr
econstructed termination is described and its interaction with water is in
vestigated. The (010) and (100) surfaces exhibit significant surface stres
ses\, suggesting possible reconstructions and explaining their high reacti
vity towards water. While water molecules form a complex and readily reori
entable arrangement on the (010) surface\, undercoordinated titanium atoms
at the (100) termination spontaneously dissociate neighboring water molec
ules. The particularly low cleavage energy of the (001) surface indicates
that it should constitute the predominant exposed termination\, in agreeme
nt with the experimentally observed cleavage plane between two layers. Rel
axation of this termination naturally leads to the organization of water m
olecules into chains similar to those observed in the bulk interlayer spac
 e. Hydration strongly stabilizes this surface\, to the extent of compensat
ing for the cleavage energy. The favorable formation of hydrated (001) ter
minations under humid conditions could therefore explain the incorporation
of large amounts of water.\nFinally\, this thesis focuses on the (001) su
rface\, which appears to be a particularly favorable environment for the p
hysicochemical activity of the material. Defects that may play a role in p
roton conduction are investigated\, along with the interaction of the surf
ace with carbonate species. The formation of oxygen vacancies is found to
be more favorable at the surface than in the bulk\, while the solvation of
Rb⁺ ions within the adsorbed water layers provides a possible pathway f
or proton transfer towards the surface. Furthermore\, the (001) terminatio
n exhibits strong reactivity towards carbon dioxide and a catalytic effect
on the formation of carbonic acid or hydrogencarbonate. The formation of
these carbonate species promotes proton delocalization between the surface
and the carbonate groups and induces defects within the water chains\, wh
ich could contribute to proton transport.\n&nbsp\;\n\nJury\n\n Eric Bousq
